Newbie with Query?

Hi I'm new to this forum and have a question about my w203 C240 (2000) model.
I have owned it for a short while and it drives like a dream but recently it has developed a clicking sound behind the dash and I'm told its due to broken plastic gears and will cost a fortune to repair. Does anyone know of a cheap fix or an easy way to disconnect the gear mechanism to stop this clicking?

Where are you? In Perth http://pacemotors.com.au will replace the gears but most want to replace the full part and is expensive..

I'm in Melbourne. I have been told by my regular mechanic that even after repair its common for the problem to return, hence the query re short-cut or trick!
